The source apportionment method of calculating air pollution emissions relies on data showing the chemical composition of particulates measured at air monitoring stations.

Based on the chemical signatures of air samples in Hong Kong, only 60% - 70% of the air pollution in Hong Kong has been shown to originate from the mainland. [1]
