Marathon runners hospitalized [1]

22 people were taken to hospital, 2 in critical condition, from the Hong Kong Standard Chartered Marathon, which took place in extremely polluted conditions. The Athletic Association pointed to the API of 100 as ‘safe’, but Clear the Air has criticized this by pointing out that in the US, an API of 88-100 means that prolonged or heavy exertion should be reduced. The API was also criticized as it represents an average of the previous 24 hours, and is thus not a real-time indication of air pollution levels.
