First environmental group lawsuit in China
A judge in Guizhou province has accepted the claim of the All-China Environmental Federation, an environmental group backed by the central government, on behalf of residents for the contamination of lakes from which drinking water is drawn. The claim is against the Qingzhen land resources bureau for leasing the land to a factory, which has not been completed. Residents are calling for the land to be taken back and the construction materials removed. Such public-interest cases are usually turned away by the courts.
