Damages awarded for exhaust in Tokyo
A court awarded damages of more than 79 million Yen to residents of Tokyo for health problems caused by car exhaust. However, car manufacturers were held not directly responsible for the health problems and did not order them to take measures to stop cars emitting suspended particulate matter. Damages were paid by the Japanese government to persons who lived within 50 meters from road sections where more than 40,000 vehicles pass during daytime hours. The main source of air pollution in Tokyo is suspended particulate matter and carbon dioxide emitted from diesel vehicles.
